The new provisional tariffs on China-made battery electric vehicles (BEVs) imported to the European Union will be imposed starting July 5, 2024. These tariffs will be in effect until the EU member states finalize their implementation through a vote, which is expected to happen in four months.
The EU's tariffs on China-made battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will be implemented starting Friday, July 5, 2024. The tariffs are not the same for each company shipping BEVs from China. The EU set specific tariffs for the big three Chinese companies: BYD at 17.4%, Geely at 19.9%, and SAIC at 37.6%. BEV manufacturers in China who cooperated with the European Commission's investigation, such as Tesla and BMW, will face a 20.8% tariff, while BEV producers in China who did not cooperate with the investigation will face a 37.6% tariff.
The initial tariff rate set by the EU on Chinese BEVs reached up to 38.1%. However, in late June, the EU revised the proposed tariffs for specific Chinese automakers. The new tariffs, which will be imposed on top of the EU's 10%, are as follows:
