The FDA approved two disposable e-cigarettes and two pre-filled e-cigarette pods manufactured by NJOY, a subsidiary of tobacco giant Altria Group. These products are menthol-flavored e-cigarettes.
Yolonda C. Richardson, president and CEO of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, expressed concern that the FDA's decision to approve menthol-flavored e-cigarette products contradicts its previous conclusions that flavored e-cigarettes, including menthol, appeal to kids and contribute to the youth e-cigarette epidemic. She questioned the basis for the change in the FDA's stance.
The FDA considered the risks of youth appeal and potential addiction to e-cigarettes, as well as the potential for harm reduction for adult smokers switching from traditional tobacco products. The agency emphasized that the approval does not mean the products are safe, but that the benefits for adult smokers outweigh the risks to youth.
