Automakers are focusing on creating unique and appealing sounds for electric vehicles (EVs) that balance being futuristic and familiar to drivers accustomed to the rev of a traditional engine. This includes designing non-tonal sounds resembling white noise or nature, as well as incorporating recognizable elements from gas-powered vehicles. Some automakers are even collaborating with famous composers and musicians to create distinctive EV soundscapes.
The survey assessing EV sounds was conducted online with 400 adults in the US. Participants ranked a series of sounds based on criteria including likability, noticeability, familiarity, and pleasantness. There were five tonal and five non-tonal sounds. The survey was a joint effort by Listen and CloudArmy.
According to a recent survey, most people prefer a "non-tonal" sound for electric vehicles, which more closely resembles a gas-powered car rather than the inorganic sounds currently emitted by EVs1. Respondents found tonal sounds to be "alarming," "ugly," and "unappealing," while non-tonal sounds were likened to white noise or "nature-derived" sounds.
