Rivian contributes its expertise in the field of electronic architecture for software-defined vehicles and the associated intellectual property via a fully paid-up license to the joint venture with Volkswagen2. This includes Rivian's new zonal architecture, which has significantly reduced the number of electronic control units used to control the vehicle, cutting more than 1.6 miles of wiring from each vehicle and enabling wireless software updates.
Volkswagen will benefit from Rivian's electronic architecture through immediate access to its advanced technology, which will accelerate the development of software-defined vehicles. This partnership will allow both companies to combine their complementary strengths, increase scale, speed up innovation globally, and reduce costs per vehicle.
Rivian plans to invest $5 billion in its Georgia manufacturing campus, which will be capable of producing up to 400,000 vehicles per year when fully operational4. The facility, located east of Atlanta, will initially employ 7,500 workers. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2022, with production starting in 2024. The campus will include abundant natural space and focus on conservation and sustainability.
