The salmonella outbreak in cucumbers was likely caused by untreated canal water used by Bedner Growers Inc. of Boynton Beach, Florida. Salmonella found in the water matched a strain of the bacteria that caused some of the illnesses reported in more than 30 states. Additional types of salmonella were detected in soil and water samples collected at the site. Bedner Growers supplied Fresh Start Produce Sales, which recalled crates of cucumbers in late May after the first illnesses were reported.

Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. of Delray, Florida recalled the contaminated cucumbers. The recall was initiated after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture informed the company that a product sample tested positive for Salmonella. The cucumbers were shipped to 14 states between May 17 and May 21, 2024.
